HISTORY OF THE CLUB
The first and only Turkish Sports Club that had many successes in the
European Cups disqualifying the German and European teams, competing in
the European Champions (Soccer) League and making in to the semi-finals
and placing 3rd in Europe was also Galatasaray.
1905
The preparations for forming Galatasaray SK are made by students in
Galatasaray Sultani, the historical name for the current Galatasaray
High School (Founded in 1481 and also known as the lycee college Galata)
one of the oldest educational establishements in Turkey. On 1 October,
along with Ali Sami Bey is recorded as founder member number one,
Galatasaray Terbiye-i Bedenniyye Kul�b� is founded. The football team
becomes a member of �stanbul League.
1909
Galatasaray SK win their first �stanbul League Championship.
1911
The Club becomes the first Turkish team to play abroad, competing in
Hungary.
1958
Becomes founder member of the Turkish Championship and has competed in
the First Division every season to date.
1962
Galatasaray SK win their first Turkish League title by four points from
Fenerbah�e SK, thus providing them with their first foray into UEFA
competition. Romanian side Dinamo Bucuresti become their oppenents in
the European Champion Club�s Cup (1962-63) with Galatasaray SK winning
4-1 on aggregate. Their also win their second round tie against KS
Polonia Bytom (4-2 on aggregate), but AC Milan comfortably account for
the Turkish challenge in the quarter-finals, winning 8-1 over two legs.
1963
The club complete the first Turkish League and cup double, narrowly
winning the championship from Be�ikta� JK (while defaeting Fenerbah�e SK
4-2 over two legs in what the first Turkish Cup final. in fact, the club
makes the Turkish Cup its own, winning the trophy for the first four
years of its existence. Metin Oktay sets the club scoring record of 38
goals in one season, recently equalled by Hakan ��k�r (1996-97)
1964
The Ali Sami Yen Stadium is opened on 20 December
1971
Galatasaray SK begin the 1970�s in impresive style, winning three
Turkish League Championships in succession, their most commanding
performance coming in 1972/73 when they win the title by five points and
complete the double by defaeting MKE Ankarag�c� in the Turkish Cup
Final. But the club draws a blank in Europe, eliminated in the first
round in each of three seasons by CSKA Moscow (1971/72, 1-4 on
aggregate), FC Bayern M�nchen (1972/73, 1-7 on aggregate) and Club
Atletico de Madrid (1973/74, 01 on aggregate)
1992
Having defeated MKE Ankarag�c� in the Turkish Cup Final, Galatasaray SK
qualify for the European Cup Winner�s Cup and enjoy their most
successful run in the tournament.
1993
Galatasaray SK win their ninth Turkish League Championship on goal
difference from �stanbul neighbours Be�ikta� JK (and qualify for the
UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club�s history by
beating Cork City and Manchester United FC in the qualifying stages.
1997
Having provided to be the best team in Turkey this season by winning the
League Championship (for the eleventh time) by a comfortable eight-point
margin, Galatasaray SK face FC Sion in the second qualifying phase of
the European Chamions Club�s Cup. In dismissing the Swiss Champions 8-2
over two legs, the Turks qualify for their third appearance in the UEFA
Champions League in six seasons. Galatasaray SK was in the same group
with Sparta Praha, ex-champion Borussia Dortmund and AC Parma and
couldn�t qualify for the quarter-finals.
1998
Galatasaray SK win their twelveth Turkish League Championship by 5
points ahead, after being 9 points behind Fenerbah�e at the end of the
first half of the league. Galatasaray SK will meet Swiss champion
Grasshopers on the second qualifying phase of UEFA Champions League.
